Nokia acquires Smarterphone

Nokia executives must have cast their glance across Finland’s borders to see whether there are any companies within sight around them that they can pick up – preferably at a discounted price, and it seems as though the answer is “Yes”. Word has it that Nokia has already ponied up a fair amount of cash, presumably, for Norwegian company Smarterphone, where their main attraction would be an operating system that delivers smartphone-like capability as well as features to basic cellphones.

While this takeover was already completed in November last year, Nokia chose 2012 to make a public announcement. At this point in time, Smarterphone’s target market would be featurephones, as well as any other handset that does not fall under the smartphone category. It is most likely Nokia will leverage Smarterphone’s resources to merge it with the aging Symbian platform, and who are we to say that some features from Smarterphone might eventually end up on Nokia’s Windows Phone devices like the Lumia 800 and Lumia 710?
