When Samsung announced the Galaxy S3, many were no doubt hoping to see an upgrade in the device’s display to that of an SAMOLED Plus HD one. Unfortunately Samsung decided to go with the same Pentile HD display that can be found on the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Now don’t get us wrong, the Galaxy Nexus has a pretty nice display but we guess fans were just hoping for something that would blow the competition out of the water.

So why did Samsung go with the Pentile HD display? According to Samsung’s Philip Berne (via Mobile Burn), the reason the company went with Pentile HD is because the screen would last longer. Due to Pentile displays featuring more green subpixels compared to blue ones (blue ones apparently degrade a lot faster), this means that over long periods of time, the quality of your display should look almost as good as the day you bought it – at least in theory. What do you guys think? Is this the real reason behind Samsung’s choice of display for the Galaxy S3?

Now apparently it is reported to be very close to a release according to TheVerge (via KnowYourMobile). Users will be able to use the eBook application just the same way you use Nokia Music and you can purchase eBooks and audio books from within the application to make your daily commute that much more entertaining.

In addition to that, users will be able to pin new publications to the home screen and subsequently, get updates on what’s going on in ‘your scene’ with RSS newstream in a future update. This isn’t exactly a first for the Windows Phone platform since some other applications can do the same thing as well, but there’s nothing like an application that has been integrated and optimized for your device.

For now, it is still unclear as to how many books will be available on the application but the hope is that Nokia will provide enough books; both free and paid to give the dominant Amazon Kindle application some proper competition. The app will allegedly be appearing in the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Russia and Spain initially after which it will roll out to Lumia devices in other countries. Nokia Reading will join the ranks of Nokia Music and Nokia Drive as Lumia Windows Phone exclusive applications. As usual, until something official comes our way, we will continue to remain impartial about this bit of information, so please take it with a pinch of salt and we will be sure to let you know when the service becomes official.

The device is expected to begin selling in Europe before rolling out to other regions although it was not specified if it would be arriving stateside. So what sort of hardware specs are we looking at here? If you’re planning on picking one up for yourself, you can expect to find a 4” Super AMOLED display with a 1GHz processor under its hood. It will come loaded with some Samsung software such as AllShare and ChatON, which for those unfamiliar will allow you to communicate with other smartphone owners with ChatON for free (uses data or WiFi). The Omnia M will also come with a VGA front-facing camera, a 5MP rear-facing camera and will run on Windows Phone 7.5 Mango. No word on how much it will cost but we expect that to vary from region to region.

A few days ago, we reported that Bethesda and iD launched a web-based version of the iconic first-person-shooter game Wolfenstein 3D. Now however, in a further development, it seems that they had also put it in the effort to make sure the game in all its glory can be enjoyed on mobile devices as well. iD software has announced that the company has made a Wolfenstein 3D game for Apple’s iPhone and iPad.

The version of the game for the iOS devices will include all six of the original episodes and lead you on your adventure through 60 different levels. In addition to that, the menu attached to the game has been given a redesign to make it easier to use along with a fix for a few sound-related issues that cropped earlier. Wolfenstein 3d might not have the graphics or the gameplay of games like Halo but for those of us who managed to squeeze in hours of gameplay when it was released 20 years ago, this iOS application is heading directly to the top of our priority list. You can download Wolfenstein 3D from the iTunes App Store here for free.

For those curious about the iBGStar, it is a device that connects to your iPhone, or iPod touch via the dock connector and will be able to take glucose readings and display the information on your phone. This will help users track their glucose levels throughout the day, carbohydrate intakes and even insulin doses for those who are diabetic.

So what about those times when your iPhone is out of battery? Fret not as iBGStar will come with a little display of its own that will provide the same readings, albeit not as detailed, which will be saved and uploaded to the iPhone when it has been powered back on. The data can also be shared via email which users can then send to their medical practitioners who can help check their levels and make sure that nothing is out of the ordinary. No word on pricing but according to Sanofi, the iBGStar should be available for purchase via Apple and Walgreens.
